I have recently acquired two new licences to run Geowalks around new parts of Cornwall.
Part of running Geowalks around different areas of the Cornish coast and countryside has required licences from the landowners or custodians. Following on from a licence from the National Trust in west Cornwall, I have recently just acquired licences with the National Trust Lizard and mid-Cornwall, and with the Duchy of Cornwall.
This has been a really important part of developing Cornwall Geologist. Acquiring a licence isn’t just about getting permission to run Geowalks, but also to work with organisations like the National Trust and Duchy of Cornwall to build on my goals – to promote, conserve, and educate about Cornwall’s amazing geology.
Working together, it allows me to run Geowalks more smoothly and ensure a better experience for those who take part. It also presents collaborative opportunities, running events in partnership with these groups to help develop a better understanding of the geology of Cornwall, and offering help with how to work with the rocks that underpin everything!
Some of the sites included in the National Trust Lizard and mid-Cornwall area are Loe Bar, Lizard Point, and Kynance Cove. I also hope to build new Geowalks in places like Church Cove, Godrevy, and Chapel Porth. There is also potential to run talks and workshops at places like Penrose and Poltesco. This all builds on the licence agreement with the National Trust in west Cornwall that includes sites like Botallack, Cape Cornwall, Bosigran, and Rinsey.
The Duchy of Cornwall includes land owned by the Prince of Wales / Duke of Cornwall. This includes about three-fifths of the foreshore around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. They also include land around Minions and Cheesewring, with scope to run Geowalks there in the future as well. It is quite cool to have a licence agreement where the licensor is Prince William! Although it has been developed and signed on his behalf, I would still be happy to offer him a Geowalk if he wants!
I am so pleased these licences are coming together. It has taken a lot of hard work making the contacts and filling out some complicated documents! I am eternally grateful for several people who have helped make this happen. In the National Trust West Cornwall Katie Reynolds and Simon Hocking. In the National Trust in Lizard and mid-Cornwall Tegen Oates-White. At the Duchy of Cornwall Josh Conibear and Sharon Bowden. Thank you all.
The benefit to you is that you can now book yourself on to some of Geowalks to these fabulous locations! You can see what Geowalks are available to book now on the website - https://www.cornwallgeologist.co.uk/guided-walks
