Cornwall Geologist Environmental Policy
Cornwall Geologist is committed to promoting environmental sustainability in all aspects of its activities. In offering guided walks and tours, talks, educational activities, and consultation, the importance of preserving the natural landscape and geological heritage for future generations is a high priority. By adhering to the following guidelines, Cornwall Geologist aims to minimise its environmental impact, protect and respect the landscapes it explores, and inspire and educate others to appreciate and care for the environment.
1. Travel
-
Strive to reduce our carbon footprint by promoting low-impact transport options, utilising public transport where possible, or car sharing if travelling in the same group.
-
Drive carefully and respectfully on country roads and lanes.
-
Park responsibly in official places, ensuring access for emergency vehicles at all times.
2. Waste Management
-
Utilise digital communication and documentation to reduce paper consumption.
-
Minimise waste and reduce single-use plastics by using reusable materials.
-
Dispose of all waste in proper bins, recycling when possible. This includes all food waste (even biodegradable items like fruit residue), and cigarette butts. If no bins are available, everything you bring must be taken away with you.
-
Participate in litter picking during activities.
-
Clean up after pets and dispose of waste in proper bins, or take it home if none are available.
3. Wildlife and Farm Livestock
-
Do not approach or feed wild animals or farm livestock.
-
Plan routes to avoid sensitive environments and minimise disruption to wildlife and habitats. Consult with local wildlife experts or organisations to ensure that routes are planned with minimal impact on sensitive habitats.
-
Try to avoid fields with farm livestock and follow designated footpaths and signage where possible.
-
Dogs must always remain on leads during activities.
4. Conservation Efforts
-
Foster a greater understanding of the natural environment, emphasising the importance of conservation and sustainable practices. Education of environmental responsibility, including the preservation of local ecosystems and minimising human impact on natural areas, is central to all activities.
-
Respect natural habitats, wildlife, and geological sites by following local, regional, or national guidelines for areas visited.
-
Sampling and hammering are prohibited during all activities and no geological material is to be taken away.
-
No fires or BBQs are to be lit during activities.
-
Whenever possible, stick to designated footpaths to minimise erosion, disruption to wildlife, and ensure safety.
-
Support and collaborate with local communities, businesses, organisations, and conservation efforts to protect and preserve unique geological features, cultures, and landscapes.
-
Source services and products from local and environmentally responsible suppliers and green initiatives.
This policy aligns with UK Government statutory guidance, provided in the Countryside Code, the Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code, and the Highway Code. Cornwall Geologist continually evaluates these environmental policies and practices to ensure compliance with all relevant environmental laws and regulations. Cornwall Geologist will regularly review its environmental impact through audits and feedback to ensure these practices are effective and continuously improved.
All of those who engage and take part in activities with Cornwall Geologist are expected to adhere to this policy and follow the “take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints” motto to minimise our impact on the environment. This corelates with the Cornwall Geologist Terms and Conditions and Code of Conduct.
Through these actions, Cornwall Geologist strives to ensure a sustainable future for our geological wonders, preserving them for future generations to enjoy and learn from.
