Geology of the SW Coast Path

Sam

28 May 2025

Listen to what I have to say about the incredible geology exposed along the SW Coast Path on BBC Radio Cornwall!

The SW Coast Path is the longest National Trail in England, stretching from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset. Along this 630-mile route you can experience an extraordinary variety of truly world-class geology.

From the granite coast of west Cornwall to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, we are blessed with not only a beautiful vistas, but access to witness and study this amazing geology.

To celebrate this wonderful trail, BBC Radio Cornwall’s Julia Skentelbery held a special morning show at the RNLI Centre at Fistral Beach in Newquay on 28th May. I was fortunate enough to be invited along to talk a bit about the geological journey you can go on around the coast path!

You can hear a clip of this interview on BBC Sounds at this link - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0lmhgz4

A massive thank you to BBC Radio Cornwall and Julia for having me back on the show.

I just want to say a huge thank you to the SW Coast Path Association for all the work they do in maintaining and promoting the SW Coast Path for us all to use and enjoy. Having travelled to many places where coastal access isn’t quite what we are used to here in the southwest, I think a lot of us don’t realise how lucky we are to have this incredible trail on our doorstep. In fact, I think I may go out for a wander on it now!

Do let me know your stories and adventures along the SW Coast Path, and even if you have completed it! If you want to join me for a geological wander on the coast path, then you can! Simply sign up to a Geowalk, you can see which ones are in the diary on the website - https://www.cornwallgeologist.co.uk/guided-walks
