February Cornwall Geotalks

Sam

23 Feb 2026

During February I was invited to give two Geotalks to groups across west Cornwall.

During February I was invited to give two Geotalks to groups across west Cornwall. It has been lovely to do, getting back to the other thing I love doing which is giving talks to big groups of people!

Both talks were titled “Cornwall’s Geological Story”. I have designed this talk to tell the story of Cornwall’s fascinating and complex geological history, from our oldest rocks to the present day, and how it all fits into our tectonic evolution. The aim of the talk is to provide a bit more context and understanding of the rocks people see when they are out and about in Cornwall, and build on their fascination of the landscape around us.

The first talk I gave was to the Peninsula Garden Society, down at Lamorna Village Hall. There were about 30 people in total, all part of this lovely group brought together by their love of gardening. The talk went down really well, and I even got to judge on their flower of the month competition! A big thank you to all those that came along, and to Bill Bankes-Jones and Penny Woods for inviting me to give the talk.

The second talk was organised by the Mount’s Bay Marine Group down at the Lugger Inn in Penzance. This one had about 80 people! I haven’t spoke to that bigger group in a while, and it was lovely to feel that thrill of standing up and talking in front of a large audience again. Thanks again for all those that attended, and to Maria Claughton for inviting me and organising the event.

If you would like to book me to give a Geotalk, then you can!

Sessions can cover a wide range of topics, primarily focused on Cornwall's geology and its profound influence on the landscape, heritage, and history of the region. They can also include other areas of Earth science, history, and the environment. They can be tailored to your group's specific interests, whether you are a local history society, an educational body, or a corporate team.

It is also my intention to organise my own Geotalks open to all. I have got some venues in mind, and few in the pipeline that I will hopefully be able to advertise soon. Watch this space!
