A New Look at the Geology of SW England Talk for Down to Earth

Sam

19 Nov 2025

Down to Earth invited me to present on one of their winter Zoom sessions, to talk all about some of the new developments in our understanding of the geology of SW England.

I was honoured to be invited by Chris Darmon and Colin Schofield at Down to Earth to give a talk entitled “A New Look at the Geology of SW England” in November.

Down to Earth is a quarterly magazine aimed at a wide audience. It is read by students, teachers, amateurs and professionals and carries news, articles and comments from around the world. They also have a Learning Zone, providing a wide range of field trips, courses and talks.

I have given several talks for Chris and Colin in the past when they run residential trips for groups down here in Cornwall, so was delighted at the opportunity to reach a wider audience through the magic of Zoom!

The talk was only an hour long, so I had to restrict the topics somewhat otherwise I would have kept them there all night! I focussed on 3 main topics:

Tectonic evolution – our current understanding and its implications

The Cornubian Batholith – new perspectives on magmatism and mineralisation

Earth resources in SW England – legacy, heritage, and future

I really enjoyed giving the talk, and taking questions from the lovely group of listeners at the end. A massive thank you to those who tuned in, and to Chris and Colin for inviting me to give the talk.
